Charting a Course Through North Star’s Operations: Meet our Operations Superintendent Jack Craig 👋

As part of our Meet the Team series, we’re continuing our journey behind the scenes to spotlight the people who power North Star. These interviews go beyond job titles - they’re an opportunity to explore what drives colleagues, how they contribute to our success, and what makes them tick outside of work.

This week, we’re delighted to introduce Jack Craig, our Operations Superintendent, who has been with North Star for an impressive 8 years based in our Aberdeen offices.

🚢 Getting to Know Jack

What inspired you to join the maritime industry and North Star in particular?
My dad was the QHSSE Manager at North Star and encouraged me to consider a career in maritime. I remember my first role as a ships runner and going onboard a ship for the first time. I loved going to the dock and getting to know the crew. It was a great introduction to the industry.

⚙️ A Day in the Life

Talk me through a typical workday?
Every day starts with gathering vital information from our vessels, including end-of-voyage reports. These reports help us track fuel usage, freshwater levels, and other key operational metrics, so we know exactly what needs to be restocked or arranged.
I handle the administrative and logistical side of vessel port calls - booking ships into the Denbridge System and ensuring smooth coordination for harbour entries. I’m also heavily involved in planning the schedule for the North Fleet, making sure everything runs like clockwork.

What excites you most about your role?
Without a doubt, it’s getting down to the ships and connecting with the crews. I try to do this at least once a week. Building those relationships is really important to me - many of us have come up through the ranks, so there’s a shared understanding and mutual respect. Being able to offer support and maintain that connection between office and vessel keeps me grounded and energised.

💡 Reflections & Insights

What’s your favourite work memory?

The early days of being a ships runner really stands out for me. It was the first time that I’d ever stepped aboard a working vessel and it absolutely sparked something in me. That moment was the beginning of my journey in the maritime industry and it confirmed that it was the career that I wanted to pursue.

Shout out!

A big shout out to my team – Donald and Jim. They’re great to work with and we’ve built a really solid partnership. We support each other and work well together which makes all the difference.

🌍 Looking Ahead

What excites you about the future of the industry?
The pace of progress. The company has grown tremendously since I first joined and that momentum shows no signs of slowing down. It’s exciting to be part of an organisation that’s evolving and pushing boundaries – especially in offshore wind and sustainability. There’s a real sense that we’re part of something bigger here.

 Off the Clock ⚽️

How do you unwind when you’re not at work?
It’s all about my daughter and fiancé but golf and football are a big part of my life too – I play off a handicap of 3 and I also play for a local football team, Hermes. Sport helps me to unwind and stay focused and I really enjoy the social side of it too.

Thank you Jack for sharing your story with us. Your passion for the industry, dedication to the team, operational excellence and commitment to building strong relationships perfectly reflect the values we’re proud of at North Star.

Stay tuned for more Meet the Team features as we continue to highlight the incredible individuals helping us navigate the future of offshore operations.
