Meet the Team: Strategy in Motion - Jen Redman

At North Star, it’s the people behind the projects who truly drive the business forward. And few embody that that quite like Jen Redman, our Strategic Projects Manager. Having been with us for just under two years, Jen plays a key role at the heart of the organisation. Balancing a dynamic career with family life. A mum of two young daughters, 2 & 4 who are in nursery just around the corner from the office, Jen has found a rhythm that allows her to thrive both professionally and personally.

Meet the Team: Strategy in Motion - Jen Redman

At North Star, it’s the people behind the projects who truly drive the business forward. And few embody that quite like Jen Redman, our Strategic Projects Manager.

Jen’s career started at Strathclyde University in Glasgow where she studied Accountancy. She graduated at a time of economic instability where positions in the financial sector were scarce. Jen found a position in Aberdeen at Simmons and Co. where she completed her ICAS qualification to become a Chartered Account. A move that had originally only been anticipated as temporary, but “fifteen years later, Aberdeen is definitely home now,” she smiles.

After Simmons, Jen enjoyed a role as part of the Corporate Development Team at KCA Deutag, further shaping her commercial and strategic skillset before finding us at North Star. Bringing with her a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective. Jen adds, “once you enter the oil and gas and renewable energy sector, it kind of defines your path within the market. That coupled with the flexibility my role affords makes this the perfect position for me at this moment.”

As a Strategic Projects Manager, variety is the norm. “There is no such thing as a typical day”, Jen explains, “every project is different, which keeps things interesting.”

From compiling of the quarterly board packs, gathering insights, analysing KPI’s and understanding performance trends to supporting major initiatives such as the office relocations, Jen’s role is both wide-ranging and impactful. Her role is one of facilitating, coordinating and driving projects to fruition and operating so close to the core of the business means that discretion is also key. Much of Jen’s work involves sensitive information, requiring a high level of professionalism and trust.

When asked what she would say if she was to meet her younger self, Jen’s answer is refreshingly honest: “there doesn’t have to be a defined path, it’s ok to see where your career takes you. And I wish I had trusted my own instincts more opposed to doubting myself so much. Have belief in yourself and your own abilities.” It’s a message that resonates, especially for those just starting out.

Balancing a dynamic career with family life; a mum of two young daughters, 2 & 4 who are in nursery just around the corner from the office, Jen has found a rhythm that allows her to thrive both professionally and personally. Outside of work Jen is keen long-distance runner. Whether it’s 10k’s or half-marathons, she fills her calendar with events to keep motivated. “It’s much easier to train when you’ve got something to aim for, especially on those evenings when the sofa and chocolate are calling!”

Recently, Jen travelled to Dubai with friends where she completed a half-marathon “we managed to squeeze in so many other fun activities too while we were there, such as quad biking and sand dune surfing in the desert, the edge walk and glass slide near the Burj Khalif as well as some relaxing at a sky pool looking on to the Palm. I have the Great North Run to look forward to in September now too.”

For Jen, one of the most rewarding aspects of her role is the visibility it offers. “I get to see the bigger picture, how the business operates and how my work contributes to that. Being part of corporate meetings and seeing outcomes firsthand helps me anticipate what is needed next”

She jokingly describes herself as “the annoying person who’s always asking for something,” but it’s clear that her ability to do so with warmth and professionalism is what makes her so effective.

Jen’s story is a great example of how careers evolve, how balance can be achieved, and how impactful a strategic role can be within a growing organisation.

Thanks Jen, for sharing your journey with us, and best of luck for the Great North Run!
